Difficult to re-issue new MyKad for Sabah, says Nazri
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz has said that it will be difficult for the federal government to issue new MyKad for those in Sabah, as demanded by the three KadazanDusunMurut-based BN parties.“It is just a suggestion by the parties, but I feel it is difficult to be implemented … (because) there are legal implications,” he said today.
Nazri (left) had earlier represented the government in signing an agreement with the Asian African Legal Consultative Organisation secretary-general Dr Rahmat Mohamad for the body to operate arbitration cases at the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre Arbitration (KLRCA).
Attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail, who is adviser to the KLRCA, had witnessed the signing ceremony.
United Pasokmomogun KadazanDusun Murut Organisation, Parti Bersatu Sabah and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah had yesterday supported the recall of the current MyKad and re-issuance of the document to genuine Sabahans only.
Abdul Gani, when asked, said he will get a briefing on the status of the Sulu gunmen who have been arrested and detained in Sabah following their incursion into Lahad Datu last month.
“If they are here illegally, we will refer the matter to the Immigration Department,” he said.
Those charged will be given legal representation – for this reason, their plea has not yet been recorded, he said.
“The courts are very efficient nowadays. The prosecution has already obtained a mention date on April 12 and the prosecution is confident of finishing the trial within months,” he said.
“The eight who are charged are Filipinos and the prosecution has submitted their names in court. You know that, when they are charged, we have to call them by name and record their plea.
“There is no issue that they are not Malaysian citizens. Nobody can deny that. If there is a dispute, show us the evidence in court that they are not from the Philippines. I am fine with that.”
Gani said responding to claims in several quarters that at least one Malaysian is among those arrested.
This follows a claim that the self-proclaimed Sulu sultan’s younger brother and alleged mastermind of the Sabah incursion – Agbimuddin Kiram @ Azzimudie – is a Malaysian and had worked as the Kudat assistant district officer.
