KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17, 2014:
The Prime Minister’s decision to form a special committee to look into the findings and compile recommendations on the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Illegal Immigrants in Sabah (RCIIIS) is just another proof of continued lack of political will to solve the decades-old problem in the state, claims DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang.
In a statement, the Gelang Patah MP today said that while the latest decision by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak may be hailed by many Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders in Sabah, the formation of the special committee to be headed by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan is just another delay tactic.
“When political will is completely absent, it is indeed fat hope since it took some seven months before publication of the RCIIIS report.
“Would Kitingan dare state when he expects the long-standing problem of illegal immigrants in Sabah is to be resolved?
“In 2015, 2016, 2017, before or after the 14th General Election, 2018, 2019 or even 2020?” he asked in response to Kitingan’s statement that the people have high hopes for the federal government to put to rest the long-standing issue of illegal immigrants in Sabah.
Many people were also eager to learn about the findings by the RCIIIS and the solutions to the issue during the the opening of the 29th Parti Bersatu Sabah congress in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
Lim claimed that the RCIIIS report was submitted to the federal government on May 14, and that the Cabinet decided exactly six months later on Nov 14 to make the report public the following month.
“Can the Prime Minister explain what the Cabinet or the federal government did in the six months from May 14 to Nov 14 with regard to the RCIIIS report?
“Did the Cabinet or federal government just sit on the report doing nothing, hoping that everybody would forget about it, but when they found that the people of Sabah, in particular Pakatan Rakyat state assembly representatives and MPs, both from Sabah and Malaysia, continue to demand publication of the RCIIIS report, they have no choice after a six-month procrastination but to promise to make it public?” he asked.
Claiming that Kitingan through his party had called on for the formation of the RCI since it was established in 1985, Lim asked how long will the new committee take before it reveals its findings and proposed its recommendations.
