Ambiga: EC cannot wait until after RCI to act

Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan today said the Election Commission (EC) must immediately lay out its plans to clean up the electoral roll in light of recent revelations by the royal commission of inquiry on immigrants in Sabah on the existence of illegal voters.
“Given that the election is around the corner, the EC owes the public an immediate response,” she told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
NONEEC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof (right) had last Thursday declined to comment on the revelations until after the RCI investigations has concluded.
However, Ambiga warned that any delays may have serious repercussions as what was revealed in the RCI may be happening elsewhere including in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak.
“The RCI findings prove that what Bersih has been saying is correct. What happened in Sabah long ago is also happening in West Malaysia now,” she said.
Ambiga pointed to the Malaysian Electoral Roll Analysis Project (Merap) which she said found similar indications (of illicit activity) in the electoral roll of the fourth quarter of 2012.
