Asking former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim to take the stand at the Sabah Royal Commission of Inquiry hearing would be 'killing' Umno, claims a party insider.
KOTA KINABALU: What was Sabah Umno’s Salleh Said Keruak thinking when he called for the Sabah Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to put Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim on the stand?
Has Salleh forgotten that Anwar, once described as being “one of the most trusted and ambitious allies” of Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is also a “master strategist” and could turn the tables on them?
So if Salleh was hoping to shift the focus away from Mahathir and his boss Musa Aman, then he’s sadly mistaken, claims a party insider.
Salleh said Anwar was duty-bound to “tell the truth” as he was “a powerful man and knew what was going on in Sabah”.
Salleh also suggested that the RCI call in Anwar.
But the insider said putting Anwar on the stand will bury Sabah Umno.
“Putting Anwar to testify is going to be a killer. Salleh is an idiot for coming out to ask that Anwar be put on the [RCI] stand.
“Anwar is a master strategist and will use this opportunity to rip Umno and Mahathir apart,” said the insider in response to Salleh’s call yesterday for the ongoing RCI to summon Anwar to testify.
The insider also suggested that Salleh may have walked into a “trap” designed by Anwar to allow himself an opportunity to “tell all”.
The insider was alluding to PKR deputy president Azmin Ali’s suggestion that the ongoing RCI into the legalising of illegal immigrants for votes in the 1990s would eventually put the blame on Anwar.
Azmin had further lambasted Mahathir, leading to the latter’s admission to Project IC which saw tens and thousands of illegals immigrants in Sabah being given citizenships for votes.
Said the insider: “I think Anwar’s team in KL is all pretending. Anwar would love to testify and get political mileage out of it.
“Remember this is the man who used the courts to give a political ceramah, what more RCI… it’s a small matter to him.”
Anwar’s rattled
Meanwhile, Gelagat Anwar, a blogsite, however, claims that Anwar is rattled by the testimonies of former civil servants who served under Mahathir, illegal immigrants and refugees of how citizenships were given out clandestinely.
According to the blogger’s sources in PKR headquarters, Anwar has insisted that a special unit be set up to monitor the Sabah RCI and is demanding that his “media monitors” compile all the testimonies and “highlight” pertinent points.
“Anwar’s hands is far from clean… as far as possible he would not want to be involved in the RCI. He would prefer to wash his hands off it.
“It is common knowledge that Anwar orchestrated the buying over of PBS state assemblymen to help Umno-BN to seize power from PBS.
“He is still trying to repeat the same predicted defection game before the election,” said the blogger.
