KOTA KINABALU: MCA Sabah Liaison Committee is also urging the government to launch an immediate investigation into those involved in assisting illegal immigrants obtain Malaysian identification documents.
Echoing the call by its fellow Barisan Nasional (BN) component members, MCA Sabah said that those who were involved in the so-called ‘Project IC’ are traitors to the country and must be brought to justice immediately.
This was among the decisions made by MCA Sabah Liaison Committee in a meeting on Friday, its chairman Wilfred Yong said.
Wilfred in a statement said, “After full deliberation of the Report of the Commission of Inquiry on Immigrants in Sabah, MCA Sabah State Liaison Committee would like to urge the Federal and the State governments to act decisively and swiftly on the following recommendations. The time for arm chair deliberation is over and it is time for the government to act. The hearts of all Sabahans can now only be tamed by actions and not by contemplation”.
Firstly, the government needs to immediately conduct a thorough investigation into the ‘Project IC’ to determine the culprits involved in the assisting of immigrants to obtain citizenship by illegal and dubious means as well as their accomplices.
The government must get to the bottom of the matter and leave no stone unturned as it is within the rights of all Sabahans to know who is responsible for such a treacherous and treasonous act. These perpetrators must be brought to justice at the soonest possible, said Wilfred.
“We also suggest the government revoke the citizenship of undeserving immigrants who have obtained their citizenship illegally and by dubious means within the next 24 months before the 14th General Election to ensure that they are not given the rights to vote and to ensure that the rights of the Sabahans are preserved.
“And understandably, as the State is heavily reliant on foreign labour, and in order to complement the labour workforce for the related industry such as construction, plantation and even domestic helpers, after their ‘IC palsu ‘ is confiscated, these foreigners should be made to register and be documented/categorized to enable them to continue working in the State to avoid a sudden shortfall in the foreign labour force (in the short term). The point to note is to ensure that there will be no ‘IC Palsu’  voting for the up-coming GE14.
“We are also of the opinion that the government must take steps to improve the current citizenship system that has been found to be weak in the RCI Report to prevent the possibility of any irresponsible parties to benefit from it. The loopholes within the system must be rectified to thwart any efforts to manipulate the system either for monetary or political gain,” he said.
According to Wilfred, a comprehensive revamp of the current citizenship granting system is timely and for Parliament to review and amend the existing laws with reference to the tried and tested practices and procedures of citizenship granting system in other established countries.
‘MCA Sabah strongly recommends a more transparent standard operating procedure on the granting of Malaysian citizenship to those who qualify without discrimination.
“MCA Sabah also views with concern that they are many persons of Chinese descent in Sabah who have not even been granted permanent residency albeit that some have been staying in the country legally for decades, whilst on the other hand, as reported by the RCI report, citizenships are being handed out readily to recent migrants from neighbouring countries and even accorded Bumiputera status that puts them at an even more privileged standing than our fellow Chinese Sabahans,” he pointed out.
Most importantly, the government must with immediate effect, establish the Permanent Secretariat and a Management Committee on Foreigners with full powers to resolve the immigrants problem in Sabah as recommended in the RCI Report in a transparent and independent manner without any discrimination and without any political influence.
